Statement From The 2025 Black Heritage Committee Regarding Our 5th Annual Flag Raising Ceremony:
“The Black Heritage Committee has been busy planning the 2025 Festivities to commemorate Juneteenth in Worcester. We wanted to bring it to our community’s attention that this year’s raising of the Juneteenth flag will be held at the YWCA Central Massachusetts.
We will NOT be raising the Juneteenth flag at City Hall this year.
Since 2021, we have made it a tradition to raise the Juneteenth flag at City Hall before the festival with the hopes that it would remain up for the day of Juneteenth and during the weekend when the festival is happening.
The city recently implemented a one-day flag policy for their cultural flag program, however, our committee has observed numerous times throughout the year that this is not always uniformly applied ,as we have seen flags raised at City Hall for multiple days despite this policy.
Last year, we were disappointed to see that the Juneteenth flag was taken down before the day of Juneteenth. We raised this concern to the appropriate offices and hoped that we would be able to work together to ensure we wouldn’t have these challenges again this year.
After we submitted our request to raise the Juneteenth flag on Thursday, June 19th, have it stay up over the weekend and taken down Monday, June 23rd, folks from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion reached out to our committee saying that this would not be possible.
They informed us that we would need to choose either raising the flag on June 19th or June 20th. Members of our committee met with Kevin Lovaincy and Patricia Lafore and reached out to City Manager Eric Batista’s office, hoping to have our simple request met.
Despite a petition that was submitted to our city council by a committee member and the fact that there are no other requests to raise a cultural flag around our requested dates, there was no attempt at flexibility from any of the city offices to simply keep the flag up for an additional day.
Our presence and our absence in spaces communicate something today and for future generations. In the current political climate locally and nationally, it is important to our committee that we align ourselves with people and spaces that demonstrate that our needs are worth making happen, that our history and our culture is worth honoring, and that our humanity is acknowledged and respected.
We have an obligation to ourselves, our community, our ancestors, and our descendants to ensure that we are in charge of our own decisions & narratives and that we will not settle for whatever is handed to us when we know we are worthy of better.
For these reasons, we will NOT be bringing our magic and our traditions to City Hall this year.
We are deeply grateful to the YWCA Central Massachusetts for their constant support of our community and for empowering our committee to act with the autonomy we deserve.
We invite those who feel moved to push back with us to reach out to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office and the Office of City Manager Eric Batista to share our collective frustration with their lack of flexibility and equity in our request.

And the city of Worcester allowed me to be SEGREGATED at Nelson Place School in the boiler room so they can stfu about pretending to care. Literally was segregated in the late 90s!
