WORCESTER— If it feels like your paycheck is disappearing faster than a Honey Farms iced coffee on a hot day, you’re not alone. Rent prices across Worcester are on the rise again, and for many families, it’s getting harder to keep up.
“I’m working full time, plus doing DoorDash at night just to make ends meet,” said Marcus, a Greendale resident and father of two. “My rent went up $200 this year. That’s groceries or gas right there,” says one Worcester resident.
Worcester, once known for its affordability, is starting to look more like Boston’s little cousin without the public transportation or salary options to match. Neighborhoods like Main South, Vernon Hill, and even parts of Tatnuck are seeing rents spike while wages stay flat.
“I’ve lived here my whole life,” said Tasha, a healthcare worker from the Grafton Hill area. “Now I’m looking at apartments in Webster because I can’t afford to stay in the city I grew up in.”
And it’s not just rent. Utilities, groceries, and childcare—it’s all stacking up. For inner-city families, seniors on fixed incomes, and young folks just trying to get started, the math simply isn’t mathing.
Community advocates are calling for more affordable housing options, rent stabilization policies, and real conversations with city leaders about long-term solutions. But until something changes, residents are being forced to make tough choices just to stay in Worcester.
“I don’t want to leave my neighborhood,” Marcus said. “But I might not have a choice.”
